And Scot Inoyue.  Hmmm...who's Scot Inoyue?  Anybody know?  Is he affiliated in any way with Yosef?  Is he affiliated in any way with Robin Freed James and Alexander James, who registered the godaddy domain for HAS?  Hmmm...he's from Hawaii?  Hmmm...he's a Gaia-worshipping Mother Earther?  Hmmm...Founder of Direct Philanthropy Global?

Well to be clear , so you understand, I am far from being a guru hunter. I am an archivist with a forum. But I am sure that the seasoned hunters will be all over any info you provide like white on rice. But I did do a few more searches, LinkedIn, Twit and more on Fakebook and nothing on an Alexander James Gagin, Sylvan Lake, MI nor a Robin Gagin.

SYLVAN LAKE -- Executive producer Alexander James of Sylvan Lake raises money for entertainment ventures in Michigan, Los Angeles, New York, London and Singapore.

    "I seek out two timeless necessities needed to produce any entertainment product -- capital and content," said James, who is vice president of development and acquisitions at Culver City, Calif.-based Dean River Productions.

    "Because without appropriate funding levels (capital), films are doomed to fail," he said. "And without commercial intellectual properties (content), no amount of money can rescue a bad story."

    He is working in partnership with the investment banking firm of Christman, Peters & Madden out of New York, Dean River Productions in Los Angeles, and the law firm of Miller-Canfield in Michigan.



    "Together, we've developed a conservative institutional strategy that captures and develops intellectual properties, while also incorporating local two- and four-year schools, so students can gain hands-on experience with regards to the business entertainment," James said.



    With films in production all around the area, The Oakland Press pulled him aside recently to ask him a few questions.



    In your opinion, how is Michigan doing with the movie industry? Has talk of eliminating the film rebate slowed film production?



    Michigan is finding its way through the maze, but very cautiously ... maybe too much so. The entertainment industry is still a great unknown for the casual observer even though it's a $50 billion-a-year business.



    Will the incentive be here in 10 years? Can I support a family on entertainment income? Are my ideas, goods and services worthy of committing my time and money? The simple answer is yes; however, the rumors are accurate ... it's not for the weak of heart. In fact, many people have described me as a Sherman tank with a slightly better sense of humor.



    And despite all the political rhetoric coming out of Lansing, film incentives really do have validity as a positive economic stimulator. Why else would every state and country be pursing similar incentives? Plus, the visual imagery indirectly promotes Michigan's natural assets on a global stage.



    In many ways the incentive could be seen as an additional advertising aid for the $30 million MEDC "Pure Michigan" campaign.



    Also, having Hollywood in-state gives college graduates a constant reminder that Michigan is an attractive place to live and work -- 50 percent now leave and never come back.



    And, given our state's current abysmal standing around the world, Michigan must do something to re-establish the truth about everyday life here inside the glove -- doesn't matter if only the locals know it's a wonderful place to live, play, work, settle down and educate a family -- we need constant good publicity for outside-Michigan investment to begin in volume.



    What is the state of films in progress right now? Can you expand on where production is happening?



    Currently, there are several active productions in the state, but history tells us that whenever a new incentive comes onto the production market, it spikes interest early and then levels out.  



    The true watermark of industry growth will be determined by three factors: No. 1 -- Technological relevance of our digital entertainment infrastructure; No. 2 -- Availability of trained work force; No. 3 -- Natural resources inherent to the area -- period neighborhoods, unique rural and urban locations, water settings, vertical architecture, etc.



    We're weak on No. 1, improving on No. 2 and very strong on No. 3.



    At best, I see Michigan being a $250-300 million boutique industry, that is, unless we begin developing our own in tell ectual properties -- i.e., Motown -- and re-invest the profits into fresh ideas.



    I don't care how high the economic incentive becomes in any state or country, long-term value in a global entertainment market place is determined by continuous innovation through new technology or original IP creation.



    The question we must ask ourselves here in Michigan is what kind of patents or products can we make that the world will purchase -- because only by leading will our economy ever truly evolve.



    Oakland County just had a "Red Dawn" remake filmed in downtown Pontiac and it was exciting to be that close to the action, but there wasn't much interaction between production crews and the local community.



    I know this is going to sound rude, but it needs to be said -- Hollywood could care less about actors, directors, writers and that includes Michiganders.



    "Red Dawn" is here because it's cheap (Michigan's 42 percent incentive) and the director likes the urban backlot feel of an empty downtown Pontiac.



    If people really want to act in leading roles, write high-profile screenplays, (or) direct movies that are seen in theaters, (they should) move to Hollywood or New York, because that's where all the bulk of the industry connections exist.



    Sure, someone might get discovered here, but that would be an exception to the rule. Once you have some industry credibility, you can live anywhere you want, but don't go looking for shortcuts. The business is hard enough to break into without creating unrealistic expectations that will consistently break your heart.



    How could the state do better attracting film business?



    While film appears to be a sexy business from the outside, from the inside it's hard-core manufacturing with a few fancy perks.



    Look, we've made a tangible product (automobiles) here in Michigan for the last hundred years. Emotionally accepting a leadership position in any new industry is our biggest challenge.



    So until local visionaries and entrepreneurs engage in the necessary learning curve and risk-taking -- especially investors -- Michigan's not going to experience any dynamic economic or population growth.



    Several generations worked tirelessly to create a century's worth of transportation innovation. It's going to take a few years to re-define what makes us great in the next.



    Entertainment is but one way, one industry, that can help tell the truth of what it means to be from Michigan.



    But our political leaders have done their job by giving us all an artistic and economic edge. We must take full advantage of this incentive and determine how much entertainment business we want versus how much will be given to us.
