The Internet has been cut off in most parts of Iraq, including the capital Baghdad, and the rate of communication has fallen below 70 percent amid renewed anti-government protests that have turned violent and spread across the country, the Internet monitoring watchdog said on Wednesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, social networking sites Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the WhatsApp messaging application were disabled across Iraq, except for the Kurdistan region, which has a separate Internet infrastructure.
Internet services were only accessible through a VPN, effectively hiding the location of the device used.
