Baghdad

A spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture Hamid al-Naif, on Tuesday, that there is a clear targeting of the Iraqi economy through the burning of agricultural crops, and called on all MPs to move to protect domestic production.

"The fires of agricultural crops are part of organized crime," Al-Naif said in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat. "The fires destroyed large areas and there is systematic targeting of grain crops."

He called on parliament members to "protect the Iraqi economy and the local product," calling on security and intelligence forces to "protect agricultural land and detect the causes of fires."

"The Ministry of Agriculture has taken the necessary measures but can not protect the farms from targeting," he said.
