Halabousi from Riyadh: It is important that Saudi Arabia has a role in the reconstruction of Iraq

Iraqi parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi met with Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz on Monday.

Halabousi arrived in Riyadh on Sunday, accompanied by a parliamentary delegation.

"The meeting discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries and means of enhancing them so as to guarantee the interests of the two brotherly peoples and the latest developments on the local and regional arenas," a statement by the office of the speaker of parliament.

The statement pointed out that Halabousi stressed the need for Saudi Arabia to play a role in the reconstruction of Iraq with its companies and expertise will contribute to the rehabilitation of many cities damaged by terrorism or those that lack services and infrastructure.

Pointing out to Iraq's keenness to develop its relations with its Arab and regional environment through joint coordination and at all levels, especially on the economic and investment levels, supporting trade exchange and opening border ports and developing them.

The statement also pointed out that Halabousi expressed his thanks for the initiative of the Saudi government to develop the Arar border port between the two countries and the establishment of a stadium in Baghdad, as well as the allocation of funds for the reconstruction of Iraq at the Kuwait Conference.

He also stressed the need to coordinate Arab efforts in order to overcome differences and problems through constructive dialogue and avoid escalation that negatively affects the security and stability of the region, while at the same time appreciating the role of Saudi Arabia in supporting Iraq.
