More than 3 million Iraqis live in slums

The Executive Director of Poverty Reduction Strategy Najla Ali Murad confirmed that more than 3 million Iraqis live in slums during a meeting of Iraqi and international officials.

Mourad reviewed the reality of the slums in Iraq and the reasons for their creation, pointing out that «about 3 million and 300 thousand people living in slums and represent 13% of the population of Iraq, and this need to be addressed, has been the development of a national program for the rehabilitation of informal housing, which includes a series of steps and procedures in coordination with (Hbitat) ».

Noting that «some of these actions related to the framework of technical work and other aspects of legal and financial, as well as the institutional framework and the provision of supplies for work and follow-up»

The Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program in Iraq, Yokoawa Tsuki, stressed that Habitat is working to help the Iraqi government to deal with slums. This is a priority for the program, expressing full commitment to solve this problem according to the map of the method developed in cooperation with the Iraqi side .

According to a statement by the Ministry of Planning, the Minister of Planning, Fuad Hussein, Secretary General of the Council of Ministers Mehdi Alalak, Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program in Iraq, Yoko Otsuki, and the undersecretaries of Planning, Finance, Housing, Reconstruction and Municipalities and a number of Directors General of the Ministry of Planning and other ministries attended the meeting.

It is worth mentioning that Iraq suffers from a severe housing crisis, and some sources estimate that the country needs to build more than five million housing units, while many residents to build housing units without a license in areas known as Ashlaiyat.
