"It was agreed to invite 36 international companies to manufacture weapons and equipment to bring their own production lines and install them in Iraq," Minister of Industry and Minerals Mohammad Shiaa al-Sudani said in a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that "Iraq will provide all the required supplies, Factories from the territory of the legal framework represented by the company of military industries, with a law that allows government companies to enter into agreements with international companies. "

"These companies were invited until next month," al-Sudani said. "This will guarantee a guaranteed market for the marketing of its products for defense and the interior. This is part of our commitment to them."

The Sudanese said that "his country will be free from political pressures on the level of armament by starting soon to produce different types of weapons with the participation of these companies," pointing out that "Iraq was relying on arming its armed forces and security services on imports for ammunition, light weapons, medium and ammunition, Cost the state about one billion and 700 million dollars every year. "

He stressed that "Iraq went to the field of investment in this sector because of the lack of investment budget because of the financial crisis," explaining that "the benefits that will be saved from investment in this sector, it will save $ 900 million annually, in addition to ensuring the operation of factories inside Iraq, And the operation of more Iraqi labor, in addition to liberating Iraq from a lot of pressure on the import of weapons, including ammunition and light and medium ammunition for reasons related to the positions of this country.

In January 2016, former Minister of Industry Mohammad al-Darraji announced the successful manufacturing and production of mortars and 107 mm rockets with local production rates of more than 80 percent, in partnership with the private sector, according to international standards.
