And it's about time to get the soil worked up, seeds ordered, etc.

Re: I Believe!
Soot, it'll be at least another two months before the frost is out of the ground here ... and May before you can plant much of anything.

Alley, our growing season is from June - September. You can get some hardy crops in a bit earlier, and keep them a bit later, but unless you use cold frames or high tunnels, late May- October is about it ... IF the frost co-operates. The last few days have been relatively warm ... 30-40F but it'll be back into the single digits - low teens the rest of the week.

Re: I Believe!
We can grow things all year round but we just have to be careful what things we plant. We only plant frost hardy because we get heavy frosts here and then in summer its mainly hard leafed things like spinach, asian greens shallots, brocoli and stuff like that, it's just that this year the heat is extreme and it's killing everything. We have huge big gum trees that are even stressed! Spring is the best time, everyone loves spring! 38C here today and it's hooooooot!!Kevind53 wrote:Alley, our growing season is from June - September. Cantaloupe, muskmelon, rockmelon.....whatever you want to call them are the best. "Ambrosia" is my favorite variety. So sweet!

Re: I Believe!
Abby Ann aren't the vines insane!!! Mine are everywhere too, it's quite untidy, I have only had 5 rockmelons on mine, but it's been super hot here so that may have something to do with it!

Re: I Believe!
I would love an orange tree, a lemon tree and a grapefruit tree in my yard ... but they would live about 5 months at the most here in New England :chilly: :chilly: :chilly:

Re: I Believe!
Funny thing with the citrus is they need a frost to have sweet fruit and plenty of water, not sure how well they'll do in the snow? We have a finger lime, limes, mandarins, orange, ice cream pudding fruit, cherry, and locut trees but because of the lack of rain and extreme heat they are all stressed! I think I would like a grapefruit too Kevin!

Re: I Believe!
Cherries, apples and pears are all winter hardy. Peaches and plums are also although less so than the aforementioned, if temps dip below about -20F you will be in trouble. Citrus needs pretty warm climates. The trees might survive, but the fruit would not mature.
On the plus side we are in prime area for maple syrup production.
