The Spirit of Supplication

I will pour out upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace or unmerited favor and supplication.

—Zechariah 12:10

According to today’s verse, the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Supplication, which means He is the Spirit of Prayer. The Holy Spirit gives us the desire to pray; that is one of the ways He speaks to us. We may not realize how often He leads us to pray and may think we simply have a certain person or situation on our minds. Learning to recognize when God is asking us to pray often takes time and is a lesson I certainly had to learn by practice.

One Monday I began thinking of a pastor I know. Over the next three days, he came to my mind repeatedly. On Wednesday, I saw his secretary when I went to an appointment at a place of business and I immediately asked her how he was doing. I discovered that the pastor had been sick that week and, in addition, he had learned his father had been diagnosed with cancer that was spreading throughout his body.

I quickly realized why the pastor had been on my heart so much that week. I must admit I had not prayed for him; I had simply thought about him. Of course, I was sorry I missed the leading of the Holy Spirit, but am sure God used others to pray for and minister to him while I was learning this important lesson about hearing His voice.
When such things happen to us, we are not to feel condemned; we are simply to learn. The Spirit of Supplication lives within us, guides us, and speaks to us. We need to continue to grow in our sensitivity to His leading so we can pray for others when He is asking us to do so and see God do great things in their lives.
