Cinco De Mayo or the Fifth of May, commemorates the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Over time it has become a celebration of Mexican - American culture. I guess you could think of it like Saint Patrick's day in Spanish ...

No, but the US is and has always been a multicultural nation. There have been different waves of emigration, Asian, Italian, Irish, Swedish, Jewish ... and most recently, Hispanic. Okie, as far as I know, is no more Spanish than I am, but like most Americans, he is aware of the holiday and speaks at least a smattering of Spanish, especially given that he apparently lives in the southwest where the density of Spanish speaking people is relatively high.

Kevin's right (as usual) about the origins of Cinco de Mayo. But in the interest of full disclosure, alleyrose, it is just a drinking holiday. Oh, and great Mexican food. In the Southwest US (where I am) the bars and restaurants do a terrific business on that day, as you can probably imagine. People of the Latin cultural pursuasion are no longer a true minority here, so between them and all the others who just want to get into the libations and food, it's a very big deal here!

The margarita that set the Gold standard. Jose Cuervo Especial® Gold Tequila and Jose Cuervo® Margarita Mix. Shaken wildly and served on the rocks...there is no other like it.


Ingredients

• 1 oz. Jose Cuervo Especial® Gold Tequila
  
• 3 oz. Jose Cuervo® Margarita Mix
  
• 1 lime wedge
  
• 1 tsp. salt
  
• Ice
  

Cooking Directions

1. Rub rim of a chilled margarita glass with half a lime. Dip into salt to coat.
   
2. In a shaker with ice add Jose Cuervo Especial® Gold and Jose Cuervo® Margarita Mix. Shake vigorously.
   
3. Strain into glass filled with ice.
