The development of fisheries in Iraq is one of the tasks that achieve food security for the country through the provision of white meat, which is important in its high nutritional value, which is one of the natural resources exploited by humans through fishing, and at the present time resorted to the method of breeding and the multiplication of valuable fish The development of fisheries in Iraq faced several challenges, hence the search for the main reasons that led to the decline of the fish sector and fisheries in accordance with the criteria and indicators adopted.
The preliminary study in the report of the Federal Bureau of Financial Supervision in the strategic planning phase and there is a major problem was the low reality of fisheries and the fisheries sector, where this problem reflected negatively on the need for the Iraqi individual white meat (fish), where the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO) that The per capita need for fish meat should not be less than (6.5) kg / year, while the share of Iraqi meat from locally produced fish ranged between (0.9 - 2.4) kg / year, which led to the satisfaction of Local markets of imported fish are of poor quality due to the high prices of local Iraqi fish Some segments of society are unable to purchase it, as shown in the chart (1) in the attached file.
The report also found that Iraq, by virtue of its location on the Arabian Gulf, has a land area of 437,072 km 2, a continental pier (2 km 2) and a sea coast (58 km). It was noted that the maritime borders overlooking the Gulf waters were not used to meet the local need of fish meat. The following table shows the marketed quantities of marine fish to the places of sale compared to the quantities of imported fish from outside the country, which contributed to the reduction of per capita marketed marine fish locally as shown in the chart (2) In the attached file:
The report included the activity of the research departments in the Ministry of Agriculture represented by the Department of Agricultural Extension and Training to guide seminars and field observations of breeders on carp fish only, while the Department of Agricultural Research did not provide any agricultural research related to the genetic improvement of Iraqi fish during the years (2011-2017)
The report included a set of recommendations, including the Ministry of Agriculture and specialized agencies to address the problems suffered by the fisheries sector and focus its efforts to develop Iraqi fish threatened with extinction, in addition to supporting the Department of Livestock represented by the Department of Education and the management of water bodies and fish hatcheries financial allocations to activate the activity of the section, especially for research operations to increase and adapt Fish, especially Iraqi ones.
