Iraq’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamad A. Alhakim together the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Dr. Abdul Amir Al-Hamdani hosted a ceremony in Baghdad to mark the return of 173 artifacts and other cultural items which have been recovered from several countries.
The event was attended by representatives of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the international diplomatic community in Baghdad.
Iraqi officials say this is just the beginning and that another 5300 artifacts are expected to be returned soon.
Thousands of ancient Iraqi artifacts and other cultural items have already been recovered in several counties including the UK, German and the USA. In February of this year, Jordan returned more than 1300 ancient artifacts to Iraq.

The Iraqi government is making concerted efforts to retrieve stolen and smuggled Iraqi artifacts and other cultural items and is coordinating with other governments around the world to recover them and ensure their return to Iraq.
There is an international consensus to support Iraq’s efforts to retrieve its stolen artifacts, underpinned by several international agreements on the return of stolen cultural property including the United Nations Security Council 2199 (2015).
