After a break of 27 years ... Finland reopens its embassy in Iraq

19-09-2018 12:17 PM

Finland announced on Wednesday the opening of its embassy in Iraq in early 2019 after a break of 27 years, noting that the decision was to promote the development of bilateral relations and trade cooperation between the two countries.

"Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers Mehdi Al-Aalak received the Ambassador of Finland who is not resident in Baghdad, and the Senior Advisor for Middle East and Africa Affairs at the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ante Loikas and their accompanying delegation," a statement from the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers said.

"The Finnish side announced a package of incentives, including the announcement of the Finnish Foreign Ministry's decision to open its embassy in Iraq early next year after a 27-year break," the statement said.

Finland has had no diplomats in Baghdad since 1991, and since 2016, Finland has dealt with diplomatic affairs related to Iraq through an ambassador in Helsinki.
