Thousands of protesters have stormed the courtyard of the Sheraton Hotel in Basra, where PM Haider Abbadi is present, well-informed sources told the Baghdad Post on Friday.

The sources confirmed Abadi had summoned the Iraqi armed forces to protect the city from being captured by the protesters.

The protests in the oil-rich Basra erupted Sunday as thousands were calling for new jobs and improving the basic services in teh province.

Up to 14 protesters have been killed and injured.

Protesters close access to Iraq's Umm Qasr port

Protesters close access to Iraq's Umm Qasr port
July 13 2018 04:13 PM

A number of Iraq's Umm Qasr port's employees said on Friday that about 100 protesters demanding jobs and better state services closed access to the port southern city of Basra, Reuters reported.

“They blocked the road leading into the port and trucks have no way of getting in or out. Port officials have asked us to go home,” one worker told Reuters.

Basra oil officials have said four days of demonstrations, which have also taken place near major oilfields, have not impacted crude production.

“We will not stop until our demands are met,” said Mohammed Jabbar, 29, an unemployed college graduate.

“If they don’t create jobs and improve services such as water and electricity we will close down Basra and oil production.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi was holding talks with officials in the oil-exporting city of Basra to discuss the unrest.

The harbor near Basra receives grain shipments and heavy equipment used in the oil industry.

14 Iraqis killed, wounded in protests southern Iraq

Post by Ponee on Fri Jul 13, 2018 5:23 pm

Iraqi security and medical sources confirmed Thursday that 14 Iraqis had been killed and wounded in the protests that erupted in the southern province of Basra.

The protests erupted Sunday in Basra against lack of jobs over crippling power cuts and endemic corruption.

Iran-allied terrorists were among those who opened fire at the protesters.

The protesters blocked roads leading to largest oil fields in Iraq to make deaf government listen to their concerns.

Iran exploits protests to stop Iraq's export of more than 5.4 million barrels to deal a blow to the world market.
