The World Bank revealed on Wednesday (January 17th) the existence of more than 600 thousand employees "surplus" need, working in Iraqi public companies, describing the Iraqi economy as "central."

World Bank representative Yara Salem explained that the World Bank emphasizes the importance of partnership between the private and public sectors in Iraq and pointed to the existence of "challenges" facing the role of public companies in the public-private partnership in a paper presented during its participation in the third episode Of a series of workshops organized in partnership between the Baghdad Economic Forum and the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, today.

Yara Salem described the Iraqi economy as a "central economy". "Public companies suffer from high production costs and over 600,000 employees, about 60 percent of whom are surplus," she said.

Many Iraqi cities are witnessing continuous demonstrations against rampant corruption in the country and the deteriorating living conditions of citizens.

The "waste" of public money and phantom jobs is an important cause of dissatisfaction.

The representative of the World Bank noted that unemployment is "a major problem in Iraq," noting that "the presence of these percentages of the unemployed is a major obstacle to reform and restructuring" in the economy.

According to the Iraqi Central Bureau of Statistics, 10.8% of the labor force are unemployed, ie, there are about 4 million unemployed in Iraq, in addition to 5.2% of the total population of Iraq with special needs Disabled), which confirms the prevalence of poverty and low standard of living.
