If...correct that there is a compromise candidate "in the works" Mahdi may well be that person. The question is whether Maliki has "signed off" on Mahdi or not. One thing is clear: he is certainly well qualified for the job. Unfortunately, I still think Maliki is going to do whatever he can to retain his position. Time will tell.
