Twist In Gay New Jersey Server’s Story: Couple Comes Forward With Receipt Showing Tip, No Anti-Gay Note
By Allison Geller, Tue, November 26, 2013
New Jersey server Dayna Morales got worldwide attention after she posted a picture of a receipt on Facebook from a couple who had stiffed her on her tip because they did not “agree with [her] lifestyle.” A couple is now coming forward with their own copy of the receipt—showing that they did not leave a note, and did leave a tip.
Morales, an ex-marine and server at Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, Somerset County, N.J., posted a copy of the receipt with a slash over the tip line and a note reading, "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle,” NBC New York reported.
A couple then came to NBC 4 with a copy of the receipt that appeared identical, except for the addition of an $18 tip, for a total of $111.44. They also provided a document they said was a Visa bill with the same charge indicated.
"We've never not left a tip when someone gave good service, and we would never leave a note like that," the wife said.
The couple believes that the incident began with a misunderstanding. They misheard the hostess and thought their server’s name was “Dan,” and when Morales came to the table, the wife exclaimed, “Woah, you’re not Dan!”
Morales wrote in her Facebook post that the wife said, "Oh I thought you were gonna say your name is Dan. You sure surprised us!"
Since the story broke, Morales has been receiving “tips” form around the world, some of which she sends to the Wounded Warriors Project.
“I just felt like people have a right to know that -- it's fine of people want to donate to her or to the Wounded Warriors, but they're doing it under a false pretense," the wife said.
The Huffington Post wrote about Morales’ alleged experience and similar incidents. A gay waiter at a Kansas Carraba’s was left a cruel anti-gay note instead of a tip last month, and a North Carolina lesbian couple was handed a similar missive by a café owner calling homosexuality an act against God earlier this year.
Morales maintained that the handwritten note was not hers and that she did not receive a tip. When NBC 4 News asked if the issue could have originated in some kind of misunderstanding, Morales said, "I don't know, all I know is what I've been saying."
