Chinese jewelry containing toxic chemicals seized
Of 7608 Chinese costume necklaces, bracelets and rings tested, only 105 were safe. The remaining jewels contain toxic levels of lead and cadmium. HCM Citys market control team on January 19 seized a large volume of Chinese costume jewelry from four shops in two local markets. They sent some jewelry to a laboratory for testing after a professor from Ashland University (USA) discovered that Chinese costume jewelry contained dangerous levels of cadmium.
A market control team representative noted that, of 14 samples tested by the Centre for Quality Measurement No.3, only one silver-plated bracelet out of 105 bracelets of the same type did not contain toxic chemicals. The remaining 7503 products have varying amounts of lead and cadmium. Notably, the cadmium content in thousands of gold-plated bracelets was as much as 17.7mg/kg and lead mounts were 665mg/kg.
The representative stated that this jewelry came from China, but, at the time of inspection, sellers could not produce invoices. These products will be destroyed.
According to chemists, cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal existing in soil and water. It is used to produce paint and industrial colorings as well as to electroplate products as a corrosive-resistant substance. Cadmium is toxic to human and can cause cancer. Wearing costume jewels with cadmium for a long time will harm a persons health, especially that of kids who often hold jewels on their mouths.
Such costume jewels are sold everywhere in Vietnam, at prices from dozens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dong.
On March 24, the market control team seized around 1000 pieces of Chinese costume jewelry at An Dong, a big market in HCM City. Some samples have been sent to a laboratory for testing. Several weeks ago, HCM Citys inspectors collected an additional 20,000 pieces of Chinese jewelry for lacking invoices.
Health experts have warned people to be wary of purchasing cheap costume jewelry without clear origin.
