Baghdad, 27 July 2020 – A European Union chartered air flight arrived in Baghdad yesterday carrying 27 tons of essential relief items for UNICEF.

The flight, which took off from the French city of Lyon in the morning and landed in Baghdad International Airport the same evening, transported educational kits for vulnerable children acquired with the support of the Governments of Germany and the Netherlands, and personal protective equipment (PPE) for health workers with support from the Government of Japan.

“The EU set up a Humanitarian Air Bridge to Iraq to ensure that essential supplies reach vulnerable children and frontline health workers in these difficult times,” said Janez Lenarčič, European Commissioner for Crisis Management. “The coronavirus pandemic is hitting the country hard, increasing vulnerability of those most at risk. The EU’s humanitarian air flights and additional funding are a tangible expression of EU solidarity with the people in Iraq in their hour of need.”

In addition, the EU has also released an additional 1 million to support UNICEF’s relief work for vulnerable people, bringing the EU’s total contribution to UNICEF Iraq this year to over 5.6 million Euros. These latest funds will be used to improve sanitation facilities and help maintain a clean environment through waste management, water quality monitoring and hygiene promotion for children and their families for an estimated 50,000 residents of internally displaced camps in the northern part of the country.

This is crucial amid the coronavirus outbreak and within the context of Iraq where only 39 % of the population has access to safe and clean water. In addition, the new funds will go towards protection services for children who are in contact with the law, including case management, issuance of identity documents, legal assistance and psychosocial support. Many vulnerable children, living both in camps and outside of camps, continue to need protection and assistance. Iraqi or non-Iraqi, thousands of children are victims of violence, abuse and exploitation.

“We are highly appreciative of the support that our EU partners are providing us so that we are able to keep children healthy and safe and help them get back to learning as quickly as possible. And at this time of critical need of supply of Personal Protective Equipment to help combat the spread of COVID-19 in Iraq, UNICEF appreciates the continuing partnership with the EU, through which we can share resources and quickly bring the supplies that are so badly needed into the country,” explained Hamida Lasseko, UNICEF Representative in Iraq.

Protecting communities from COVID-19: Canada commits funds to tackle growing pandemic in Iraq

Baghdad, 27 July 2020 –The Government of Canada has contributed US$1.85 million (CAD 2.5 million) to support the Government of Iraq’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Iraq.

The funds will be directed toward two critical areas of work; $1.85 million will support UNDP Iraq’s immediate response to COVID-19, which supports 12 governorates, and includes increasing the testing capacity of laboratories, providing personal protective equipment to healthcare workers, increasing the number of isolation wards, and undertaking assessments to establish post-COVID-19 recovery strategies. An additional $75,000 will be used to provide local police engaged in Iraq’s COVID-19 response with personal protective equipment including masks, gloves and hand sanitizer, largely focusing on officers in Baghdad, which has seen the highest number of cases in the country.

“The emergence of COVID-19 has presented yet another challenge for Iraq – which is still reeling from the devastating effects of the ISIL conflict, and is now faced with an economic crisis due to the decline in oil prices. This generous contribution from Canada will ensure the health and safety of communities through access to improved health services and infrastructure, and protect those serving local communities in the line of duty,” says UNDP Iraq’s Resident Representative, Zena Ali Ahmad.

The funds have been repurposed from existing agreements under UNDP Iraq’s Funding Facility for Stabilization, and the Security Sector Reform/Rule of Law programmes. As one of UNDP Iraq’s key partners, Canada has provided approximately $27 million to the two programmes.

The authorities closed the parks and commercial centers during the Eid al-Adha period, fearing the spread of the Coruna virus.

On the other hand, the economic researcher, Ammar Al-Rubaie, said in his interview with "Al-Iqtisad News", that "Iraq is witnessing a stifling financial crisis that shows the state's inability to pay the salaries of employees with the decline in oil sales and the closure of border points that negatively affected life as it caused an increase in poverty and unemployment rates." .

He added that the citizen is currently thinking of buying only the things that he considers very important to his life and steer clear of luxury goods.

The sacrificial market also witnessed a very large decline, despite the increase in supply due to the inability of families to buy sheep to slaughter an offering to God for their dead.

Economy News - Baghdad

The World Economic Forum’s management announced in a statement that the Davos Summit 2021, scheduled to be held mainly in the winter, in the Swiss resort, has been postponed to “early next summer,” due to the lack of appropriate conditions to organize it “safely” in January in light of the outbreak of the new Corona virus .

"The World Economic Forum decided this afternoon (Wednesday) to reschedule the annual meeting for 2021 at the beginning of next summer," a spokesman for the organization said in a statement, adding that the decision was taken after experts saw that it was not possible to hold the summit "safely in January. " .

"The decision was not easy, as there is an urgent need to gather world leaders" in order to plan for "relaunching (the economy) after Covid 19, " the French Press Agency quoted the spokesman as saying .

Although the organization avoided giving a specific date for the 2021 Forum, it hinted that the forum could not be held in Davos, as the statement stated, "You will receive details about the dates and location of our annual forum after rescheduling it as soon as the conditions are in place to ensure the health and safety of all participants and those who host them ."

The management of the World Economic Forum said in early June that it would like to keep the famous annual forum in the small town in the Swiss Alps, but "in an unprecedented way" that includes "conversations taking place in person and virtually ."

In addition to the summit, which has been postponed to the summer, the forum’s management plans to organize “virtual dialogues at a high level during which world leaders can share their views on the world in 2021” and that “during the week beginning January 25. ”
