The problem in America is that the cops and common society has been programmed by the media as per orders of your government and the puppeteers who dictate your government. To believe and accept that there is a ghostly enemy within who wants to do destroy and attack them. Paranoia thru racism is the number factor, the white colony are just scared of anyone that is of color or who speaks another language that is different then english. This is a very sad situation for all America. Be blessed.

The American obsession with gun ownership and use is a puzzle to us here in the UK. And to the rest of the civilised world as well I would imagine.

Well here's another statistic, douchebag. In the UK about 2 officers are killed in the line of duty per year. In Japan it's practically zero. In the US from 1990-2010 we lost an average of 164 cops per year in the line of duty. And for the record, there are nearly twice as many whites shot by cops each year as blacks. The same can be said for Latinos, Asians, Indians ... etc.

There are bad people out there - it's a fact. If someone was to break into my home, I would rather have some control over the outcome and not be forced to depend on others. Especially in instances where seconds count.

I hear that quite often. Are there any statistics on how often people have managed to protect themselves or their loved ones with firearms?

And the puzzle is - why do Americans feel the need for firearms to protect themselves from their fellow citizens? I certainly don't feel that need here in the UK. Are Americans just worse people? (Of course, not you or your friends and family ssmith! I mean the other ones.)

I genuinely do not understand it.

I don't put a lot of faith in studies/statistics, because numbers can be skewed to back up the argument of whichever side is presenting them.

There is crime here.... home invasions, etc. There is a gang problem. People with drug addictions are more likely to steal/rob rather than have a job. Having a gun isn't a requirement, but it is a right that we have if we so choose.

Have I been robbed/house broken into? No, but I still have guns and I have used them. One instance in particular was when I had a 4.5' rattlesnake in my driveway. Shooting it was the safest and most efficient way to go.

Hope that explains things a little. From my viewpoint anyway.

Ethel, I think the big difference between our two countries as far as guns is concerned is how we began. England (Britannia) evolved over a period of centuries after the collapse of the Roman Empire, whereas the US was a British colony that won its independence from the use of firearms. We see the right to bear arms as paramount to preserve liberty. As a result we have criminals who have access to guns, and so law enforcement also needs guns. To be honest, I think I'd be okay living in your country or some other gun free Western country. I'm not too crazy about gun culture myself, but I do enjoy freedom so I accept it.

Thanks ssmith and sam - that does help explain. I actually feel sorry for you (I hope not in a patronising way) that so many of you feel that you need to live this way. But, as you say, your history is different.

Yep, I don't think many of us ever feel the need to go armed. Mind you - we don't have rattlesnakes either!
