Bin Laden's son-in-law faces life in prison
Osama Bin Laden’s son-in-law Sulaiman Abu Ghaith convicted of conspiring to kill Americans as Al Qaeda mouthpiece
Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, 48, was captured on tape spewing hateful speech about Americans following 9/11. He was found guilty on Wednesday by a Manhattan Federal Court jury. He now faces a sentence of life in prison.
His sick words finally caught up to him.
Osama Bin Laden’s son-in-law was found guilty Wednesday of conspiring to kill Americans as an Al Qaeda spokesman and recruiter around the 9/11 attacks.
Sulaiman Abu Ghaith’s fate was decided by the anonymous jury of nine women and three men in Manhattan Federal Court, mere blocks from Ground Zero.
Abu Ghaith, 48, spewed hateful speeches alongside Bin Laden in several Al Qaeda propaganda videos filmed shortly after 9/11, including one made outside a mountain cave in Afghanistan the day after hijacked airplanes brought down the twin towers, hit the Pentagon and crashed into a Pennsylvania field.
The highest-ranking Al Qaeda figure tried on American soil since 9/11, Abu Ghaith now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
“I can imagine no more fitting outcome, and no stronger message to those who would harm our nation and its people,” U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said of the verdict.
“It was appropriate that this defendant, who publicly rejoiced over the attacks on the World Trade Center, faced trial in the shadow of where those buildings once stood.”
Abu Ghaith sat silently and listened to an Arabic interpreter as his verdict was read.
The bearded Kuwaiti-born cleric, dressed in a black suit and white dress shirt, appeared at ease and smiled slightly as he was led out of the courtroom.
The storm of airplanes will not abate,” he warned.
Prosecutors said Abu Ghaith knew about a post-9/11 Al Qaeda plot to detonate shoe bombs on American planes.
The first evidence jurors saw was a photo of Abu Ghaith sitting next to Bin Laden.
When he took the witness stand, the defendant admitted that the Al Qaeda leader summoned him on the night of Sept. 11, 2001, and asked him to address the world — and that he agreed.
Defense lawyers called Abu Ghaith a nonviolent scholar with no military role during his time with Al Qaeda. They plan to appeal his conviction.
The terror mouthpiece believes his trial was unfair, lawyer Stanley Cohen said.
“He has confidence that this is the beginning, not the end,” said Cohen.
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said Abu Ghaith, “was more than just Osama Bin Laden’s propaganda minister. Within hours after the devastating 9/11 attacks, Abu Ghaith was using his position in Al Qaeda’s homicidal hierarchy to persuade others to pledge themselves to Al Qaeda in the cause of murdering more Americans.”
Abu Ghaith is set to be sentenced on Sept. 8.
But Abu Ghaith insisted that he was in Afghanistan on a “humanitarian mission” and that his speeches were built around bullet points that he received from Bin Laden.
Prosecutors said Abu Ghaith helped Al Qaeda by speaking at training camps in Afghanistan before 9/11 and by preaching in propaganda videos after the attacks. Bin Laden needed the passionate orator to recruit new suicide fighters, the feds said.
“These young men who have destroyed the United States and launched the storm of airplanes against it have done a good deed,” Abu Ghaith said in one video.

So he gets sentenced to life in prison. He will receive three hots and a cot plus all the special treatments of being a Muslim. Who will foot the bill on this one, Hmmmmm can you say " the American taxpayers". Ugggggg not going to say what really needs to be his punishment because that would be biased towards the Muslim Brotherhood.
