Re: VEGETABLE?
A 'parsnip'- It's a cross between a turnip, and a carrot- The parsnip resembles a 'mutant carrot', and is a 'light brown in color, but they taste real good, like a 'sweet, spicy carrot, but not hot spicy-

Parsnip
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Not to be confused with Cow parsnip.
Kingdom: | Plantae |
(unranked): | Angiosperms |
(unranked): | Eudicots |
(unranked): | Asterids |
Order: | Apiales |
Family: | Apiaceae |
Genus: | Pastinaca |
Species: | P. sativa |
Pastinaca sativa L.[1] |
Pastinaca sativa fruits and seedsThe parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) is a root vegetable closely related to the carrot. It is a biennial plant usually grown as an annual. Its long tuberous root has cream-colored skin and flesh and can be left in the ground when mature as it becomes sweeter in flavour after winter frosts. In its first growing season, the plant has a rosette of pinnate, mid-green leaves. If unharvested, it produces its flowering stem, topped by an umbel of small yellow flowers, in its second growing season. By this time the stem is woody and the tuber inedible. The seeds are pale brown, flat and winged.

Re: VEGETABLE?
Yumm, parsnips are one of my favorites. As long as we are off topic, here's my contribution:
Best sliced like carrots and sauteed in butter. Yeah, I know. But a little butter never hurt anyone. Sprinkle with sea salt. Or for wimps, saute' in olive oil (but really we are not supposed to cook with olive oil, just use it for flavoring after it's cooked) or grapeseed oil.
Can also saute' with other roots=diakon radish, turnips, rutabaga, carrots, raw ginger for flavoring, and add a few brussel sprouts for green color. Sprinkle with olive oil and sea salt, add spriggs of rosemary or whatever herb you like, and cover with foil, put in oven.
Parsnips are my secret weapon when I want to impress someone. Sneak a few minced pieces in any soup or beef stew and people will rave. They won't be able to figure out the "full flavor" they taste but cannot identify. Haha! I admit I'm shameless when I want to show off!

Look for something that looks like a white carrot. They are delicious, cooked or raw, sweet with a mild flavor. One of my favorite ways to have them is in a roasted root veggie dish. I'll take them carrots, turnips, rutabagas, yams, onions ... whatever is available and looks good, julienne them and toss them with a little oil, salt pepper, paprika, other spices, and perhaps some balsamic vinegar, (what exactly depends on my mood.) Spread them out on a parchment lined baking sheet and oven roast at about 425 until they get some nice caramelization. Serve hot.

Technically, no, but they are very, very similar and people pretty much use the terms interchangeably.

Yes they are ... They also make great chips ... sometimes we'll slice them thin and pan fry them with a little salt and pepper.

Re: VEGETABLE?
I'm no expert, but I always buy the garnet yams. The color is deeper than a sweet potato, and they don't seem as starchy. Oh, and they are yummy...baked, steamed, fried, french fried, sauteed, in casseroles, pies, soups and sauces. I even steam them and mash with shredded canned chicken to bury my dogs pills. They just think it's a treat, and the pills go down without incident.

Re: VEGETABLE?
We don't do the marshmallows or nuts ... but whip them with a little butter, salt, pepper and sherry. As always, don't use a beverage you would not drink yourself, and test responsibly ...

Re: VEGETABLE?
The sherried sweet taters was my grandmother's recipe. She never shared it with anyone, but it was a holiday tradition at her house. It took me a while to duplicate it precisely, but I think I even figured out exactly what sherry she used ...
