Congress reaches debt deal AP story
Well well well they finally got this debt deal done...rick152
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ending a perilous stalemate, President Barack Obama announced agreement Sunday night with Republican congressional leaders on a compromise to avoid the nation's first-ever financial default. The deal would cut more than $2 trillion from federal spending over a decade.
Default "would have had a devastating effect on our economy," Obama said at the White House, relaying the news to the American people and financial markets around the world. He thanked the leaders of both parties.
House Speaker John Boehner telephoned Obama at mid-evening to say the agreement had been struck, officials said.
No votes were expected in either house of Congress until Monday at the earliest, to give rank-and-file lawmakers time to review the package.
But leaders in both parties were already beginning the work of rounding up votes.
In a conference call with his rank and file, Boehner said the agreement "isn't the greatest deal in the world, but it shows how much we've changed the terms of the debate in this town."
Obama underscored that point. He said that, if enacted, the agreement would mean "the lowest level of domestic spending since Dwight Eisenhower was president" more than a half century ago.
Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid provided the first word of the agreement.
"Sometimes it seems our two sides disagree on almost everything," he said. "But in the end, reasonable people were able to agree on this: The United States could not take the chance of defaulting on our debt, risking a United States financial collapse and a world-wide depression."

Well isn't this good for our coumtry??? Obama gets his blank check now. But, hold on, there will be committee to come up with the future spending cuts. If Reagan was still alive, I wish we could ask him how those future spending cuts worked out. Ain't gonna happen. Way to go Repubs...you need to remember the ONLY reason that you were put in a position do something was because WE THE PEOPLE are fed up!!!!!! And if you can't or won't do the job then come next election we'll find someone to replace you.

Re: Congress reaches debt deal AP story
Have you seen the programs they intend to cut?
I especially liked the ones about unpaid taxes from FEDERAL employees and taxpayer paid union activities!
Throw the bums out!!! Contact your Reps and Sens and find out who sponsored these two bills and who voted for them to allow this RAPE of taxpayer money. Then work to eliminate the author(s) and YES votes - get these "ON the taxpayers Dimers" OUT OF OFFICE.
Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.
Also get rid of the plague in the White House (impeachment would be nice - voted out in 2012 would be acceptable - failure would be the end of this nation.)
Get your legislatures to pass RECALL bills for Federally elected officials. Include provisions for "conduct unbecoming" and failure to consult by vote the electorate in their district(s) on any deficit spending bill, increase in debt, and matters concerning new taxes or programs to aid any government employee (elected or hired).
We also need to pass State Laws that allow us to take away congressional (House and Senate) retirements (other than Social Security) and medical benefits (other than Medicare). If they are paid the proceeds go to that Rep. or Sen's STATE GENERAL FUND. They also need to pay up on the Social Security money that they pilfered and face prosecution for tapping the Social Security Fund - no different than any Corporate executive that has done the same.

Well spoken.
I would like to add, that in all most other countries where slavery was legal, it was abolished without war. The civil war used the slavery issue to cicumvent state's rights and create a strong federal gov.
Rigjt now many states are putting this monster on notice. I think that this vemue is a great arena to start with for real solutions. It is not that difficult to run for these positions either, if some wish to get their feet wet in politics, they could even infiltrate both parties, run from both sides, eventually, get in and become indepenants if they choose.
The state sovrreignty movement is somewhat hopeful. We, for the most psrt have lost represenntation at the federal level to corporate interests.

Wes, why do you blame the republicans? They came up with deals that were tabled. Obama said he wouldn't even look at what they had worked on. Republicans have very little power but are being blamed? Where is fairness? Obama is playing the blame game. Are we not a country of all of the people.

Sorry wes, WE THE PEOPLE voted the republicans in to STOP THE MADNESS. O, Reid, and most of the democrats have been on a record spending spree to bankrupt our country and turn our once proud nation into a third world United Socialists of America. I say job well done, Republicans, stick to the real reason you were voted in to office. Just say no to any bill that does not contain an amendment requiring a balanced budget. Let's vote these socialist agenda driven dems out of office in 2012.

Short attention span...
It seems everyone has forgotten that in reality, IF we did default on our debts, that it would have been done deliberately, not by necessity. A treasury report confirmed that there were enough funds/revenue, to meet our uobligations, just not all the extra Fluff that 'O' and Co wants to spend. Does it not seem reasonable to be very suspicious of this deal? Supposedly, 'No New Taxes' ? So what does that mean? they just modify or reinterperate an old tax law, so that they can steal more of our money from the RV ? Something to consider IMO.

I blame the republicans for not standing up for their principles. For not listening to the people, of which 75% support a balanced budget amendment. This was a manufactured crisis created by Obama. We were never going to default. They should have called his bluff and not gave in. IMO.trepid wrote:Wes, why do you blame the republicans? They came up with deals that were tabled. But by caving in and giving Obama another $1.4 trillion blank check and NO balanced budget amendment seems to be the same ol' thing to me.

They haven't caved in yet, Wes, the vote hasn't taken place in Senate or House. Let's hope they stand firm

I agree that this "compromise" is a HORRIBLE DEAL for this country...
The more I learn about this bill, the more I hope and pray it gets voted down... I am listening to Rush right now, and what is in this bill is downright scary... There will be tax increases on everyone...
My vote is not only NO, but heck NO!!!!!!!!
