The department I belonged to before I moved had an old piece of wooden water main they had dug up ... maybe 30 or so years ago now ... in the middle, was a wooden "cork" driven into a hole drilled in it ... an original fire plug. Back when they were pumping with the top two, they would dig down to the main, and drill a hole in it to get water at a major fire ... afterwards, they made a plug and drove it into the hole they drilled and then covered it back up. Hence the term fire plug for hydrants when some of us were a tad younger.
