Al-Sihoud: Wrong policies, partisan and sectarian quotas have caused a catastrophic failure in the management of water resources in Iraq

Sunday 16, May 2021 14:54
Amara / Nina / Former member of Parliament, candidate for the State of Law coalition, Muhammad Saadoun Al-Sihoud, said that the wrong policies and partisan and sectarian quotas have caused a catastrophic failure in managing water resources in Iraq.
Al-Sihoud said in a press statement today: “The sectarian, partisan, and factional quotas weakened a large number of ministries, including the Ministry of Water Resources, due to the influence of parties or blocs over this or that ministry, as well as the lack of professionalism of the minister himself due to his lack of competence, specialization, or independence,” indicating that "This weakness has cast a shadow over securing water quotas and limiting its scarcity in the summer season, and thus the water levels in it are very dangerous, especially after the construction of the" Ilisu "dam in Turkey, which reduced the volume of water releases in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
He added, "Among the reasons for the decline in water levels in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers is the ministry's inability to limit violations of water quotas between governorates and the riparian countries, as a result of poor communication and dialogues and lack of commitment to international agreements, as well as poor storage and use of rainwater in winter and the absence of plans. And major projects that secure water resources for many years. "
Al-Sihoud pointed out that the suspension of the dredging projects, treatment of rivers and streams, and the construction of artesian wells, especially in recent years, also negatively affected the development of water resources, which weakened the agricultural and animal production in Iraq.
It is noteworthy that the Tigris and Euphrates rivers are witnessing a dangerous decline in their levels, especially recently, due to the lack of water releases from Turkey.
