Iraq moves to retrieve 600 million euros of Saddam's regime funds from Italy
Shafaq News / The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed, on Thursday, that it is seeking to recover the frozen Iraqi funds.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Al-Sahhaf said in a brief statement received by Shafaq News; "Work is underway to recover the Iraqi funds frozen in Italy since the time of the former regime, indicating that they amount to about (600) million euros.
For his part, Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein said: We are working to recover the funds frozen in Rome, along with the interest
This came during his meeting with a group of official economic institutions concerned with foreign trade and Italian companies, in an economic meeting sponsored by the Iraqi embassy in Rome, and in the presence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to Italy, Safia Al-Suhail.
At the beginning of the meeting, the minister presented an overview of the unilateral nature of the Iraqi economy that depends on oil resources to a large extent, stressing the Iraqi government's endeavor to diversify sources of income by strengthening the role of the private sector and increasing investments to support the Iraqi economy in light of the large resources that Iraq possesses, whether oil or Invasive, agricultural and tourist.
He also pointed out that work is underway to recover the Iraqi funds frozen in Italy since the time of the previous regime, which amount to about (600) million euros plus the interest value.
