Iranian agricultural crops and animal products are among the most important materials that enter Iraq on a daily basis, as they exceeded the market needs and prevented Iraqi farmers from selling their crops.
According to a local official in the Iraqi province of Diyala, which borders Iran, "the Iraqi-Iranian border is wide open to agricultural goods and crops, which enter in very large quantities," indicating to Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed that "there are no specific controls to regulate the import process, rather there are Merchants control the incoming quantities, and that these traders are linked to influential parties and armed groups. "
The official, who declined to be named, confirmed that "these materials are sold at prices lower than the prices of the local product, which caused the local product to stagnate because it did not achieve any profits," stressing that "in the event of continued import and smuggling operations, local production will lose the ability to resist." Especially agricultural and animal products. "
A member of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, Representative Ali Al-Badiri, commented on this phenomenon, saying that the government "is the only one in the world that fights the local product of its country, unlike the governments that protect, encourage and support their national products in order to be secure in terms of food security and to obtain economic profits."
He explained in a press statement, "The government is under regional and international pressure to continue importing from these countries, and therefore we see that all border crossings are open to agricultural products that are supposed to be prevented from entering because of the availability of local products that can fill the market needs, and this causes great losses to farmers." Those who suffer from the lack of government support for them. "
He pointed out that "the government talks in the media about supporting the national product, but the application on the ground is completely opposite to that, although local production provides many job opportunities for unemployed youth, as well as it contributes to keeping hard currency inside the country, and today we urgently need it." In light of the stifling financial crisis that Iraq is going through, and therefore the local product must be truly and truly supported.
Economists warn of the consequences of not devising a plan to manage and regulate import and domestic production in the country. The expert on economic affairs, Jassem Al-Mahlawi, said that "the Iraqi market today is based on imported goods, whether they are officially imported or through smuggling," indicating to "The New Arab", that "the Iraqi market is almost completely flooded with agricultural and animal products, and that prices These products compete with the prices of the local product. "
He asked, "Where does the local product go? There is no need for the Iraqi market to it, and there are no outlets for its export," adding: "We need to put in place an urgent plan to regulate the movement of goods entering and produced in Iraq, otherwise eliminating the local product will cost the country a lot of hard currency, at a time. Badly needed this currency. "
Al-Mahallawi held the government responsible for smuggling, calling on it to "take urgent action and devise thoughtful plans to secure the import process, according to the market’s needs only."
Experts fear the growth of this phenomenon, especially as it comes at a time when Iraq is going through a stifling financial crisis due to the drop in global oil prices due to the impact of the Corona pandemic, which prompted the government to raise the value of the dollar against the dinar, which led to a significant rise in commodity prices.
