(Baghdad: Al Furat News) The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, announced today, Saturday, the appointment of Ingebjurg Solron Giladottir from Iceland as the new deputy of his special representative for political affairs and electoral assistance in the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).


The United Nations said in a statement that Al Furat News received a copy of, that "Giladottir will succeed Alice Walpole of the United Kingdom, whose mission will be completed at the end of February 2021, and the Secretary-General expresses his gratitude to Walpole for her dedicated service since 2017 to the United Nations in Iraq."


He added, "Gisladottir will provide this position with a wealth of diplomatic and political experience, including from her recent role as Director of the Bureau of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and most recently as head of the organization's election observation mission in Ukraine."


The statement continued, "Gisladottir served as the regional director of UN Women in Europe and Central Asia, its country representative in Turkey and Afghanistan, and was Iceland's foreign minister from 2007 to 2009, a member of parliament for seven years, and the mayor of Reykjavik for nine years, namely Member of the Nordic Women Mediators Network.


He pointed out, "The new deputy holds a BA in History and Literature from the University of Iceland, and has also completed postgraduate studies in history at the University of Copenhagen."
