Zeina stressed that the establishment of sustainable development committees at the governorate level is an important institutional step forward for localizing and adapting sustainable development goals to fit local realities in strategic frameworks and plans, and this is crucial to ensuring national development priorities. She indicated that the process of assessing the data gap for the sustainable development goals, which was conducted by the Central Statistical Organization with technical support from the United Nations Development Program in Iraq, represents a necessary first step in dealing with some gaps.
As this important report provides a detailed analysis of the current SDG data gap in Iraq and proposes alternative methodologies and assistive mechanisms to provide data that are not currently available, allowing and facilitating decision makers to efficiently prioritize strategic development paths. Indicating that the data gap assessment aims to expand the statistical monitoring capacity of the sustainable development goals in the country through technical support to civil society organizations in Iraq, ministries and executive departments, to assess the adequacy of the currently available data, and to identify missing data. And she continued by saying:
The electronic platform for exchanging data on SDG indicators has been developed over the Internet with the efforts and experiences of the Central Bureau of Statistics and UNDP experts. Noting that this platform will be a first step to strengthening the national data system and will help facilitate the flow of data across institutions and strengthen studies and research in this regard.
In addition, the first day of the conference witnessed the holding of several working sessions, which dealt with the localization of sustainable development indicators related to the environmental and economic dimensions, as well as sustainable development paths within the national content. The workshop also witnessed the launch of the Gap Report and the Sustainable Development Data Platform.
