Controversy Over The Iraqi Government's Decision To Sell State Real Estate
The Iraqi Minister of Finance, Abdul Amir Allawi, signed a decision that enables the State Real Estate Department to sell Iraq's movable and immovable money, without returning to parliament or offering it to public auction, without the need to publish in the official newspaper or a public auction with an estimated value and immediate approval of the sale decisions.
The decision aroused the ire of Iraqi parliamentary parties, who questioned the intentions of the Finance Ministry, about suspicions of corruption surrounding this decision.
Najm Al-Qassab, a political analyst, said that some MPs fear that these decisions will be surrounded by suspicion of corruption.
Official authorities believe that this authorization does not mean giving the State Real Estate Department a free hand in disposing of these properties as it pleases.
Haider Majeed, a spokesman for the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, said that what was issued recently by the Minister of Finance does not mean disposing of state property, as there is a law that governs this department.
The Iraqi state real estate is estimated at 600 thousand real estate and 68 mansions registered in the name of the Ministry of Finance.
Parties, militias, and influential parties control 60% of them illegally, and state property imports are estimated at 700 billion dinars annually.
From the government's point of view, this decision will contribute to restoring state funds and real estate that are illegally controlled by influential parties in Iraq, but Parliament sees in this authorization another aspect of corruption and tampering with state property.
