Parliament voted, on Monday, to Iraq’s accession to the 2006 Maritime Labor Convention and the Maritime Document Identity Agreement No. 185 of 2003.

The 2006 Maritime Labor Convention sets minimum standards for the work and living of all seafarers working on ships
The Iraqi Parliament voted, on Monday, to Iraq’s accession to the 2006 Maritime Labor Convention and the Maritime Document Identity Agreement No. 180 of 2003.

The approval of the House of Representatives came in its 13th session of the current legislative term headed by the First Deputy Speaker, Hassan Al-Kaabi.

The 2006 Maritime Labor Convention sets minimum standards for the work and living of all seafarers working on ships flying the flag of any country that has ratified the treaty. 

The agreement is an essential step towards achieving fair competition for countries and shipowners who still pay the price for price competition from shipowners that do not meet standards, according to the International Labor Organization website .

The agreement, widely known as the "Charter of Seafarers' Rights", was adopted by representatives of governments, employers and workers at an international labor conference of the organization in February 2006, and the terms of the agreement's entry into force on August 20, 2012.

The convention is designed to be universally applicable, uniformly applicable, and easy to understand and update. 

The agreement is unique in that it aims to achieve decent work for seafarers and to secure economic interests by ensuring fair competition among owners of high-quality ships.

It is comprehensive and provides for the right of seafarers to work under decent conditions, as it covers almost all aspects of their work and lives on board ships, including employment contracts, hours of work and rest, wages, as well as medical care on board ships, and other aspects related to the employment of seafarers. .

The 2006 Maritime Labor Convention applies to a wide range of ships operating on international, national or local voyages, with the exception of those that sail exclusively in inland waters, or in waters located in or adjacent to protected waters, or areas to which port regulations apply, as well as ships participating in Fishing and in similar matters, and traditional vessels such as boats, sailing vessels, warships and support boats.

The International Labor Organization stated that the signatory countries of the treaty include more than 50 percent of the world's seafarers and more than three-quarters of the world's total tonnage.
