The Arab Monetary Fund publishes a study entitled
"Evaluating job losses due to the Corona pandemic and estimating the minimum required for economic growth to create jobs in Arab labor markets."
- The unemployment rate in Arab countries is expected to rise by at least four percentage points in 2020, based on expectations of economic recession resulting from the emerging corona virus pandemic
- Expect the loss of at least 6 million jobs in Arab countries as a result of the pandemic in 2020
- The rate of economic growth required to restore jobs is estimated at about 4 percent at the level of the Arab countries as a group
Within the framework of the efforts made by the Arab Monetary Fund in terms of research activities to support decision-makers in Arab countries on priority issues, the fund recently prepared a study on "assessing job losses due to the Coronavirus pandemic and estimating the minimum required economic growth to create jobs in Arab labor markets."
The study adopted a standard model to estimate the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on unemployment rates in a number of Arab countries. The study revealed the asymmetric effect of business cycles on unemployment, as they showed a greater impact of recessions on Arab labor markets compared to periods of expansion.
The study also indicated that in light of the projected recession estimates of the Arab economies by 4 percent in 2020, the Arab region is expected to lose about 6 million jobs in 2020, which represents an increase in the unemployment rate by no less than four percentage points at the level of Arab countries as a group compared to levels recorded before the pandemic.
In addition to the above, this recent study estimated the minimum required economic growth that would enable the creation of new jobs sufficient to reduce the unemployment rate in the Arab region by about 4.0 percent.
