A MASSIVE explosion has killed at least ten people and left hundreds injured after the blast devastated part of Lebanon's capital Beirut.

Pictures show buildings destroyed, people walking wounded, and a sea of wreckage after the blast that could be heard some 125 miles away in Cyprus.

Lebanon's state news agency NNA and two security sources said the blast had occurred in the port area where there are warehouses housing explosives, reports Reuters.

Buildings around the port have been levelled, windows and doors have been blown out and huge plumes of smoke are blowing across Beirut.

The Government Palace - the home of Lebanon's PM Hassan Diab - was damaged in the blast, and his wife and daughter were injured in the explosion.

Video shows a column of smoke rising from the port area from what appeared to be an initial explosion, followed by a massive blast that sent up a mushroom cloud and a shock wave.

Lebanese security services have said the blast was caused by a fire in a depot of highly explosive material, including Sodium nitrate.

They said that material was confiscated from a ship months ago and stored there.

The Lebanese health ministry had previously claimed the explosion was caused by fireworks.

Al Mayadeen television reported there were hundreds of casualties, and the Lebanese Red Cross have said they are receiving thousands of emergency calls.

Beirut's governor Philip Boulos called the explosion a national disaster and compared it to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear attacks.

It is estimated up to 226,000 people were killed when the US dropped nuclear bombs on the cities at the end of World War 2.

Lebanese security and medical sources have confirmed at least ten dead bodies have been removed from the scene of the explosion.

Beirut announces that half of its area has become unfit for habitation

Economy News - Follow-up

Marwan Abboud, the governor of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, said that nearly half of the area of Beirut has become uninhabitable. Abboud explained that the material damages are greater than we expected and may exceed five billion dollars, and that the engineers of the Beirut Municipality are still conducting studies, and the survey work is continuing to determine the losses. Pointing out that the sea front neighborhoods were completely destroyed, and the environs in the port were over 50% damaged .

The Governor of Beirut pointed out that the Lebanese capital has become a disaster city, and more than 300,000 people have been made homeless by the destruction of their homes, and the destruction has affected public and private institutions, companies, and all the neighboring buildings close to the site of the explosion at Beirut Port .

A large number of hospitals around Beirut were damaged, and three of them, which are private hospitals, are completely out of service, according to what the head of the Private Hospitals told Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed, due to the great damage they caused and led to 6 deaths of the medical and nursing staff and the blackout .

The massive explosion that occurred yesterday in the Beirut port resulted in complete destruction in the central building of the EDL, where the National Control Center is located, which completely went out of service, and as a result of that, the Ministry of Energy announced in a statement today that, after the efforts of the Foundation's efforts, tremendous control was made in the network National transportation manually from Basalim station, to maintain the maximum level of nutrition to keep up with the rescue work .
What do experts say about the health risks of ammonium nitrate for Beirut residents?

The blast also caused the explosion, according to the statement of the Ministry of Energy, to exit the main transfer station in Ashrafieh, Beirut, from service, and it is still up to now, in order to avoid any violations or danger to the public safety of citizens. Maintenance teams began work on surveying the damage in preparation for the start of necessary reforms in order to gradually return to the electrical current in the affected areas of the capital, Beirut .

The explosion, which occurred in Amber No. 12 in the port that contains ammonium nitrate, weighs 2750 years, which has existed for 6 years. A large number of foreign Arab media companies, offices, and institutions, the majority of which are based in Beirut, at the level of Lebanon .

In the context, the President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, decided to liberate the extraordinary accreditation stipulated in Article 85 of the Constitution and in the 2020 budget, which amounts to 100 billion Lebanese pounds and is allocated to exceptional and emergency circumstances .

Video clips showed great damage to the port and the surrounding neighborhoods, as a result of the explosion, which damaged 15 kilometers, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Defense .

Earlier Wednesday, the Lebanese Ministry of Defense vowed to punish those responsible for the negligence that led to the Beirut port explosion .

Defense Minister Zeina Aker said, through her account on Twitter: "Six years have passed since this massive neglect ... Yes, the officials will be punished," without additional details .

The Lebanese Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, declared a day of national mourning for the victims of the explosion, and the Lebanese Supreme Defense Council considered Beirut a "disaster city", as part of a package of decisions and recommendations to face the repercussions of the accident .

Diab asserted in a speech to him: "What happened will not pass without an account, and those responsible for this disaster will pay the price ."

The explosion comes just days before the judgment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, on Friday, in the case of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, in a massive bombing targeting his convoy, in central Beirut, on February 14, 2005 .

Tuesday's explosion adds to the pain of a country that has been suffering for months from the repercussions of a severe economic crisis and intense political polarization, in a scene in which regional and international parties overlap .

It is expected that the Lebanese market will experience a shortage crisis in many of the main commodities in the local markets, during the coming period, with all stores and silos being damaged in Beirut Port, the largest in the country .

After talking about the possibility of a wheat shortage crisis during the coming period, the Lebanese Ministry of Economy assured, on Wednesday, that sufficient quantities will be available for one month, but the fate of the rest of the other commodities remains unknown .

The director general of the Ministry of Economy, Muhammad Abu Haidar, said in a television statement, that his country is not facing a flour crisis .

Lebanon is suffering the worst economic period since the Civil War (1975-1990), accompanied by a tightening of the US dollar in the market, a drop in the exchange rate of the lira and a dramatic rise in the prices of products .

Iraq accepts Lebanon's request to send diesel instead of crude oil

06/08/2020

Live: Massive explosion shakes Lebanon's capital Beirut 22326

Economy News - Baghdad:

The Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, which is close to the current government of Hassan Diab, revealed Lebanon's request to replace crude oil with diesel that is used in power stations.

"The Economic News", the text of the report is published,

Hours after the massive Beirut port blast, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi directed his team to stand by the Lebanese government and its president, Hassan Diab, in the face of the disaster that struck Lebanon and the Lebanese.

In the next few hours, Lebanese convoy - coming from Iraq through Syrian territory - will enter a convoy of 22 huge tanks, loaded with diesel, in "first" assistance, according to a senior Iraqi government official. The Iraqi official, religious, political, and popular bodies expressed their full solidarity with Lebanon, using all their capabilities to serve the Lebanese people and their government. The Iraqi position, in more words than one Lebanese political source, was "very advanced".

The traffic movement between Baghdad and Beirut, during the past two days, was "fast translation", as they said.

Yesterday evening, Diab - in the Grand Serail - received an Iraqi delegation headed by the Minister of Oil, Ihsan Abdul Jabbar, who briefed him on the Iraqi medical supplies that arrived in Beirut, and the oil offers that were launched from Baghdad. Abdul-Jabbar pointed out that "the aid amounted to 20 tons of medical and health supplies," stressing "the commitment of the Iraqi government to stand by Lebanon in this ordeal."

He added, Al-Kazemi promised the Lebanese government to "provide fuel, provided that the medical staff will remain in Beirut until the Lebanese side authorizes him to return."

In this context, the intensive "communications" conducted by the Director General of Public Security Abbas Ibrahim, with Al-Kazemi, promised to provide Lebanon with 100,000 barrels of diesel per month (about 20 million liters), through Syria. Iraqi sources said that Iraqi shipments will be free for a period of 3 months, provided that the two sides agree in the next few weeks on a "soft" payment mechanism, taking into account Lebanon's need for hard currency and its economic situation, while Lebanese sources indicated that the two sides did not enter into price details Shipments.

Here, the Iraqi movement stands out - early July, when Abdul-Jabbar and Minister of Agriculture Muhammad Karim al-Khafaji visited Beirut, to create a "understanding" that would provide Lebanon with Iraqi oil in exchange for hospital services and agricultural exports. Throughout the past period, numerous obstacles prevented reaching a final formula for the expected understanding, including internal political complications (in Iraq and Lebanon), and regional and international (US "veto"), except for the protocol and technical-logistical complications. But the port explosion accelerated the pace of planning and implementation.

In Baghdad, an atmosphere that inspires optimism in the aspect of developing the relationship with Beirut. Some officials assert that a "quantum shift" will be witnessed in bilateral relations, especially since the Iraqi side "will not stand as a witness to the Lebanese economic crisis", as "aid will also include wheat and other types of grains." The sources add, to "Al-Akhbar", that the Iraqi embassy in Beirut has intensified its contacts with the Lebanese government departments to know their basic needs, and has raised a "list" of them to those concerned in Baghdad.

In the coming hours, the second Iraqi assistance will arrive, which will "somewhat" contribute to securing part of Lebanon's need for hydrocarbons used in power plants. Information indicates that Baghdad wanted the convoy to be loaded with "crude oil" and "gas oil", but it returned and replaced all of it with diesel, at the request of the Lebanese side, and the Ministry of Energy will receive it. The Iraqi side, according to the information, is keen on securing "what is possible and what is available" of Lebanon's need for wheat mainly, especially that the port explosion has hit - to a large extent - wheat silos.

Parallel to the official position, it was very noticeable by the step of the “Supreme Religious Reference” (Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani), with his representative in Karbala Ahmed Al-Safi announcing his readiness to treat those who want in the hospitals of Al-Kafil, in the city of Karbala, and at the expense of the “Abbasid threshold.” Also prominent is the Iraqi popular movement on this level, and many activities continued with Lebanese parties (including Hezbollah), and its expression of "everything Lebanon needs to cross this stage."

Economy News - Beirut

Lebanon announced its desire to buy Iraqi oil at subsidized prices in the coming days.

The Lebanese Energy Minister, Raymond Ghajar, said in a statement to Al-Iraqiya News channel, which was viewed by Al-Iqtisad News, that "Iraq provided goodwill to help the Lebanese people before the disaster that occurred in Beirut recently."

He added that "Lebanon is working to develop relations with Iraq and wants to buy quantities of oil at good and appropriate prices with facilities that suit the Lebanese financial situation."

For three months, Iraq provided 300,000 barrels of gas oil free of charge to Lebanon to operate power stations damaged by the Beirut port bombing.
