On Saturday, the Ministry of Agriculture suggested that Iraq achieve 300% self-sufficiency in the barley crop, noting that there is a million tons of the crop ready for export.

The Ministry’s spokesman, Hamid Al-Nayef, said in a statement reported by the official “Al-Sabah” newspaper and seen by “Al-Iqtisad News”, that “this year will be distinguished through the cultivation of strategic crops, as about 9 million dunums were planted with wheat and about 4 million dunums of barley.”

Al-Nayef added, "The quantity expected to be harvested from the barley crop this year is estimated at 4 million tons, while last year we achieved self-sufficiency from this crop, and we have a million tons ready for export."

He continued, "It is likely to receive two million tons of barley in this season," stressing that "with the harvest season this year, we will achieve self-sufficiency of barley by 300 percent."
