The Minister of Planning announces the launch of the National Food Security Project in Iraq
The Minister of Planning, Dr. Nuri Sabah Al-Dulaimi, announced today, Wednesday, the launch of the National Food Security Project in Iraq (2020-2022) with the aim of achieving self-sufficiency in agricultural crops and animal products in 2030.
This came during the high-level ministerial meeting attended by the Ministers of Trade, Agriculture and Water Resources, the Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture, Water and Parliament Marshes, the Resident Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the President of the General Union of Agricultural Cooperative Societies, and representatives of the public and private sectors.
Dr. Nuri Al-Dulaimi explained during the meeting the importance of the project economically and developmentally, which will lay down a strategy for advancing the reality of the agricultural sector according to the available capabilities, achieving the sustainable development goals of reaching food security and achieving self-sufficiency in crops and agricultural and animal products, and uniting all relevant efforts towards reactivating the sector’s contribution Agricultural diversification in diversifying the economic base and sources of income and providing more different job opportunities and thus reducing the poverty rate, so that its contribution to that would be competitive in the gross domestic product with various sectors.
For his part, the head of the Committee on Agriculture, Water and Parliament Marshes, MP Salam Al-Shammari stressed the importance of increasing joint cooperation between the public and private sectors in advancing development in accordance with a clear methodology of work, and adopting a sustainable agricultural development strategy. Ways to support the agricultural and industrial sectors to achieve the basic pillar of the project to provide food security and meet the market need, confirming the emergence of its results recently after the application of curfews and the closure of border crossings.
While the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Saleh Al-Hassani drew attention to the Ministry's success in producing quantitative wheat at four million seven hundred thousand tons, and preventing the import of 25 agricultural products and crops during 2019 in addition to a surplus of feed barley ready for export, stressing the importance of the National Food Security Project in light of the decline The sharp global price of oil and the economic consequences caused by the emerging Corona virus.
To that, the Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Jamal Al-Adly, affirmed the Ministry’s preparation of a general strategy in coordination with the relevant authorities in the public and private sectors and the international community, which is a road map for developing water resources until 2035 and achieving the requirements of food security, energy security and environmental conservation, including the implementation schedule The necessary costs, indicating that the Ministry launched the project for the cultivation of the Western Badia for Iraq after determining the underground water reservoirs, their quality and quantities, and the launch of the first million dunums for farming in the desert without the need for the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
