On Sunday, Minister of Transport Abdullah Laibi announced laying the foundation stone for the (silk tunnel) project in Basra Governorate / Khor Al-Zubayr, while noting that the tunnel is designed to display three lanes in each direction with a special service and emergency corridor.

The ministry said in a statement, "Economy News" received a copy of it, "Today, Minister of Transport Abdullah Laibi laid the foundation stone for the (silk tunnel) project in Basra / Khor Al-Zubayr Governorate, in the presence of the Minister of Planning and Chairman of the Parliamentary Services Committee."

 
Laibi said during the statement, "We will embark on the first stage of the project of constructing the Al-Zubair channel tunnel (basin for the manufacture of concrete parts) according to the contract concluded with the Korean company Daewoo and under the supervision of the Italian consulting company Tintel," noting that "the tunnel is the first of its kind in the Middle East as a tunnel for underwater vehicles in a way Pour and float the concrete pieces and lower them to the bottom of the channel. "

 
He added that "the length of the tunnel is 2.5 km, including closeups and the upper surface, and the surface of the tunnel will be 16 meters deep under water, while the bottom of the tunnel will be 31 meters deep." He pointed out that "the tunnel is mainly composed of 10 square units, the length of each one is 125 meters, width of 35 meters and height 11 5 meters

 
He continued, "These pieces will be poured into a special basin that will be implemented for this purpose," explaining that "the basin dimensions are 300 * 400 meters from the bottom and are dug up to 18 meters in the form of a graduated inclination after drawing water from it, taking into account the weakness of the soil, and pouring its base so that Be ready to pour the box pieces. "

 
Laibi stressed that "the tunnel is designed to display three corridors in each direction with a corridor for services and emergency," noting that "the ministry is striving to develop the infrastructure for most of its formations, especially Iraqi ports, through an integrated work system aimed at using modern advanced methods in the work mechanism."

 
It is mentioned that the Ministry of Transport has planned within the government program many important projects that contribute to revitalizing the Iraqi economic side, the first and most important of which was the Grand Faw Port Project, which has become today an integrated economic city through parallel work for all side projects of the project that will link the East with the West via its sea and its land to match global ports .
