Economy News _ Baghdad

The Central Bureau of Statistics announced, on Monday, that the production of dates in Iraq for the past year of 2019 amounted to 639 thousand tons, indicating that the average production of one palm reached 59.7 kg.
The agency said in a report, seen by the "Economy News", that the production of dates for the 2019 season and for all varieties of governorates, with the exception of Anbar Governorate, due to the difficult security situation in them, amounted to 639.3 thousand tons, a decrease of 1.1% from last year's production, which was 646.2 thousand tons, indicating that Al-Zuhdi cultivar is considered the main class that constitutes the center of gravity for the production of dates in Iraq and contributes about 52.2% of the total production of Iraq.
He added, "The average productivity of the date palm was 59.7 kg, for the governorates covered, and the highest average productivity of the date palm was achieved in Salah al-Din Governorate, where it was 88.6 kg, and the lowest average productivity of the date palm was in Diyala, where it was 36 kg."
He pointed out that "the total production of al-Zuhdi in Iraq was 334 thousand tons for the governorates covered, a decrease of 5% from the production of al-Zuhdi last year, which was 351.6 thousand tons, at a rate of 52.2% of the total production of dates."
Iraq was until the end of the sixties of the last century, exporting about 75% of the world's dates and occupies the first position, but in the past four decades it has fallen to the ninth position, due to the lack of water quotas, diseases and wars that have killed millions of trees since 1980.
