BAGHDAD -
The Syrian and Iranian sides signed on Saturday a memorandum of understanding that includes rebuilding the electricity system in Syria and resettling and developing the electrical equipment industry. This included the establishment of a tripartite electrical link between Iran, Iraq and Syria, through a joint partnership that undertakes the necessary studies and technical preparations.
The memorandum, signed by Syrian Electricity Minister Mohammad Zuhair Kharboutli and Iranian Reda Erdakanian, aims to "develop and stabilize the Syrian electricity system, self-reliance, and the localization of technology and electrical equipment industry in Syria" and includes work on "rebuilding the Syrian electricity system and resettling the electrical equipment industry in Syria." ".
The memorandum includes "the establishment of power plants and transmission and distribution networks, and work to rebuild and reduce the damage in the electricity distribution network in the areas of engineering, operation and customer services."
The Memorandum of Understanding also includes "joint investment and exchange of technical information for the construction of types of power plants and renewable energy, as well as the reconstruction, rehabilitation and upgrading of power plants, operation and maintenance, securing spare parts for plants, repairing electrical transformers and producing electrical products and devices, with priority given to the production of smart equipment, transformers and cables".
The Memorandum of Understanding also "seeks to create a tripartite electrical link between Iran, Iraq and Syria, through a joint partnership that studies and technical preparations necessary."
The ministry's website quoted the Syrian and Iranian ministers as saying that they stressed the seriousness of the two parties to implement the memorandum as soon as required, and to "continue to work for the development and localization of the technology and electrical equipment industry in order to restore the Syrian electrical system to what it was before the war and achieve self-sufficiency."
The electricity sector in Syria, like other sectors, was destroyed and vandalized, some generating stations were completely destroyed as in Deir Ezzor, some were partially destroyed, and some equipment was dismantled and sold.
