MOSCOW - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Baghdad on Monday for an official visit during which he met Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Ali al-Hakim.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister, according to the Iraqi news agency "conscious", that they discussed trade relations and facilitate the granting of visa and support for Iraqi students and developments in the region, in addition to discussing the file of combating terrorism and the unity of Syria.

The Minister stressed the depth of Iraqi-Russian relations and the importance of strengthening them, noting that the political dialogue between Iraq and Russia is continuing.

For his part, Russian Foreign Minister said that the political dialogue between Iraq and Russia is continuing, and discussed the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

Lavrov said there were more than 3,000 Iraqi students studying in Russia and 100 diplomats training.

He continued: "We stressed the importance of launching an effective political process in Syria, stressing the importance of initiatives to ensure the security and stability of the Gulf and freedom of navigation.

"We support with Iraq initiatives on UN resolutions on the Palestinian issue, " Lavrov said .

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed with Iraqi President Barham Salih the latest developments in northeastern Syria, where Turkey launched a new operation against Kurdish fighters.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Lavrov and Saleh discussed in a telephone call on Thursday issues related to the developments in the situation in northeastern Syria. Dialogue between Damascus and Ankara, as well as between the Syrian authorities and representatives of the Syrian Kurds. "
Lavrov and Saleh, according to the statement, the readiness of Russia and Iraq to contribute to the establishment of these contacts, and agreed to continue to exchange views and coordinate positions in the future.
The call came a day after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the launch of a new military operation in northeastern Syria, dubbed the "spring of peace," aimed primarily against Western-backed Kurdish units, which Ankara considers a terrorist organization.
