Dawa Party comment on the "intervention" of the Revolutionary Guard to keep Maliki at the head of the party

2019/06/12 08:23:29
The Islamic Dawa Party (Dawa) on Wednesday suspended reports that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard had intervened to keep Nuri al-Maliki at the helm of the party during his reelection as secretary-general.
"What has been published in some Arab media about the intervention of the Revolutionary Guard to keep Nuri al-Maliki at the head of the party is incorrect, and these allegations and statements have been heard for 15 years, since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime and until now," the party's leader told Reuters.
"The issue of electing a new secretary-general of the Dawa Party is an internal Iraqi partisan issue. There is no pressure from any outside party. There is no conspiracy or movement to oust Nuri al-Maliki or Haider al-Abadi or other figures."
The Arab press said earlier that Maliki was still getting limited support from within the Dawa Party, but his hopes of staying on the party's head were fading unless Qassim Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force in Iran's Revolutionary Guard, succeeded in breaking the equation.
The press reports that he is pressing the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, a terrorist organization according to US regulations, to ensure that Maliki remains at the head of the Dawa Party, which threatens the efforts to overthrow him.
