Baghdad

President Barham Salih stressed that Iraq is based on its national interests and is keen on stability in the region.

This came on Sunday at the Peace Palace in Baghdad, the Iranian ambassador to Iraq, Erj Musjedi.

"During the meeting, they discussed the latest political developments on the Arab and regional arenas, as well as discussing ways to strengthen the friendly relations and cooperation between the two neighboring countries," he said.

Saleh said during the meeting that "the positions of Iraq and its handling of the crisis in the region stems from the independence of its national decision and clear policy to avoid the region further escalation and tension and crises, and to preserve its national interests and protect the stability achieved for Iraqis and the peoples of the region."

He stressed "the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between Iraq and Iran and ways to develop them," adding that "the historical responsibility, in the midst of the complex conditions experienced by the region, we must make efforts to ease tensions and prevent any escalation threatens the stability of our peoples, Addressing crises, stressing "the need to respect the sovereignty of States."

In turn, Ambassador Masjedi renewed his country's support for Iraq and its keenness to promote joint action between the two countries, praising Iraq's positions at the international and regional levels.
