The US embassy in Baghdad confirmed on Sunday the United States' commitment not to use Iraqi territory to attack neighboring countries.

This came during an interview with the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy, Joy Hood, with the Commander of the Federal Police Forces, Major Raed Shaker Jawdat, in Baghdad.

"The US commitment to Iraq is one of the most important strategic partners in the region and the importance of a strong, stable and sovereign Iraqi government," the embassy said in a statement.

"The United States was very confident in the determination of the Iraqi security forces to keep people safe," he said.

He said Washington would "continue its partnership with Iraqi forces by providing advice, training and equipping it in its efforts to eliminate Saddam as a threat to Iraq."

The embassy's charge d'affaires referred to "the US commitment to the Strategic Framework Agreement, including the prohibition of the use of Iraqi territory to attack any other country."

The agreement "strategic framework" is the one signed by Baghdad and Washington in 2008 under the former US President George W. Bush, and paved the way for the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq in late 2011 after eight years of occupation.

The agreement regulates relations between Iraq and the United States in various fields, especially military and economic.

Last week US authorities postponed non-essential staff from the US Embassy in Baghdad and its consulate in Erbil.

US President Donald Trump's administration said it had sent additional troops to the region to counter what it called clear threats from Iran and factions backed by Iraq against US interests.

Iran and the United States said they did not want the war as tensions between the two countries escalated.
