INTRODUCTION
The Union of Arab Banks will host its International Arab Banking Summit (IABS) for 2019 in Rome-Italy on June 25-27, 2019. The Summit, which is an annual international platform, gathers Ministers, Governors of Central Banks, senior executives from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), leading bankers, decision-makers and representatives of public and private sectors from numerous global nations to discuss issues of concern to the international banking community and the wider global economy.
UAB’s IABS Rome 2019, will focus primarily on the Mediterranean finance and banking aspects in the form of “Euro – Arab Mediterranean Dialogues for a better Economic Zone”, taking into consideration that the first edition of the MBD was held during IABS 2018 in Paris under the High Patronage of the President of the French Republic Mr Emmanuel MACRON.
OBJECTIVE & SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SUMMIT
Over the past few years, the Mediterranean region has experienced periods of disarray and violence. From factional politics, to wars, to humanitarian and refugee crises, the region has gradually become the epicentre of the most dramatic policy challenges confronting the EU/Mediterranean and Arab countries. If left unresolved, these challenges may have far-reaching negative repercussions. As a result, Euro - Arab relations are and will continue to be a major source of economic cooperation, foreign investment, trade, and development aid in the Arab region, and have a vital role in promoting societal resilience, as well as human, economic, and financial development.
Along these lines, the Rome Summit will facilitate discussions among banking and financial leaders in addition to government and public sector officials and will present an important assessment of the Euro - Arab Mediterranean economic & banking relations and emphasize the need to launch initiatives between public and private sectors in order to strengthen these relations and open channels of cooperation, trade and bilateral investment.
Amidst recent developments, and in an effort to foster Euro-Arab Mediterranean dialogue, businesses, economic and banking relations, the Summit, through its discussion panels, will focus on formulating various ideas and recommendations on new partnership opportunities. It aims at putting governments, businesses, and financial institutions on the right track towards the inevitability and importance of mutual economic relations to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity.
