Apropos, I thought:

"Today in 1948, the U.S. kicks off a $13-billion aid program to rebuild war-torn Western Europe. The Marshall Plan encourages free markets, open trade and industrial modernization. "Our policy is not directed against any country, but against hunger, poverty, desperation and chaos"

Lagarde: Prospects for global growth are "precarious" amidst trade tensions

2nd April, 2019 Shorter version of interview

Global growth is losing momentum amid growing trade tensions and tightening financial conditions, but the temporary suspension of interest rates will help boost activity in the second half of 2019, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said on Tuesday

Lagarde said in a preview of the IMF and World Bank spring meetings from April 12 to 14 that the world economy was "unstable" after two years of steady growth, noting that prospects were "precarious" and vulnerable to shocks to financial markets and trade And Britain's exit from the European Union

"In January, the IMF projected global growth for 2019 and 2020 to be around 3.5 percent, lower than in the recent past but reasonable," Lagarde said in remarks prepared for the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington. , As you will see in our revised forecast next week

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) does not expect a near-term recession, and "the pace that has become more cautious in returning to normal monetary policy" by the Federal Reserve will provide some support for growth in the second half of 2019 and in 2020

However, Lagarde warned that years of high public debt and low interest rates since the financial crisis of 10 years ago do not allow enough space in many countries to move when the economy enters the next downturn, so countries need to use fiscal policy Smarter way

This means "achieving the right balance between growth, keeping debt within tolerable limits and achieving social goals" and "addressing excessive inequality" by strengthening social safety nets, according to Lagarde

The Director of the IMF reviewed a new IMF research showing that the rise in trade barriers is detrimental to investment in factories, machinery and projects that provide jobs LINK
