The Chinese president comments on his conversation with Trump

30th December, 2018

Confirmed Chinese President, Xi Jinping, Saturday, in his first comment after his telephone conversation with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, Washington and Beijing are willing to make "steady progress" in relations between them. "China and the United States are working to implement the terms of the truce they reached earlier this month to calm the trade war between them," Xi was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

Xi said during the call that he hoped that "the two sides will meet halfway and reach an agreement that benefits the two countries and the world as soon as possible," according to the agency. The Chinese president said relations between the world's two largest economies "are now at an important stage." "China attaches great importance to the development of bilateral relations and appreciates the willingness of the US side to develop cooperative and constructive bilateral relations," he said.

Washington and Beijing imposed reciprocal customs duties on more than $ 300 billion worth of goods earlier this year, putting them in a dispute that contributed to the fall in financial markets. Relations between the two countries have improved since their leaders agreed in early December on a 90-day truce to reach an agreement.

There were little signs of improvement, and Trump stopped launching new threats. Trump began the trade war because of what he considered unfair Chinese trade practices, and agreed with him in Japan, the European Union and others. Trump seeks to significantly reduce the trade deficit with China, and calls on Beijing to implement reforms to open the economy to foreign companies. LINK
