Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers confirms that Iraq will conduct a comprehensive population census takes into account the changes in the country 2018-12-12

The Secretary General of the Council of Ministers d. Mahdi al-Alaq, head of the Population Policy Committee, said that the data and statistics collected by the census will help in making important future decisions and will provide increased planning for economic, social and other development in Iraq.

This came during the inauguration of the consultation workshop on the planning of the 2020 census, which was held in the capital Baghdad in the presence of the Minister of Planning of the Kurdistan Region Ali Al-Sindi and the Director of the United Nations Population Fund and the directors of the concerned departments in the ministries of planning and the federal region, as well as a number of representatives of donor countries.

The Secretary-General added that Iraq will conduct a comprehensive population census, including the Kurdistan region, while taking into account the changes in the country from the collapse of oil prices and the occupation of the terrorist call for a number of areas, and will adopt modern frameworks and techniques using population statistics for better distribution of government funds, Pointing out that Iraq has not conducted a real census since 1987.

For his part, al-Sindi stressed the existence of a clear political consensus between the federal and provincial governments to implement the census, whose indicators will contribute to the assessment of development goals, providing data and statistics to analyze and evaluate the changes taking place in the country.

In addition, the workshop discussed the implementation of the census and the most important challenges facing statistical operations.
