Iraq's border crossing authority issued a clarification Sunday on the import of used cars.

"Used US cars are not covered by the decision to prevent entry, provided they do not suffer damage to drowning or collisions," Kadhim al-Aqabi, head of the agency, told a news briefing.

He added that "Resolution 435 of 2018 on the prevention of the importation of American cars was applied wrongly, and the use of damaged and unaffected cars was prevented, which triggered a wave of rejection and condemnation."

Al-Aqabi pointed out that "the Council of the Border Crossings Authority held a meeting in which the decision was clearly defined and that the vehicles covered by the ban are used and damaged by a sinking or collision. The used and non-affected cars are allowed to enter and be in the model."

"The agreement and clarification of this part of the decision is a first step to lift the ban on cars that are damaged as well, to ensure the source of livelihood that depends on many of the professions associated with those cars."
