( Reuters) - The Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday the election of Iraq as vice-president of the United Nations General Assembly for the 73rd session, saying that Iraq would take over the post, which was a diplomatic victory.

"Iraq was elected as a vice-president of the United Nations General Assembly for the 73rd session," said ministry spokesman Ahmed Mahjoub. "Iraq looks forward to playing a pivotal role in implementing the 2030 sustainable development agenda, In addition to actively contribute to the development of the working methods of the General Assembly and enhance the role of Iraq in the international arena. "

"The efforts of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry represented by its minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and its leadership cadre and its permanent representative at the United Nations in implementing Iraq's calm, balanced and moderate policy in the international community in general contributed to Iraq's position," Mahjoub said.
