Iraq's grain imports will be high in 2018 due to dry weather this year, an Iraqi official said on Sunday.
The statement by the head of the Iraqi National Investment Commission, Sami Araji, told reporters during a conference in Kuwait.
"In the next ten years, we will encourage agricultural investment to reach self-sufficiency as well as export. This is the goal. We talk about strategic crops like wheat and barley. "
Iraq is a major importer of grain and consumes about 5 million tons of wheat annually.
The Ministry of Commerce imports rice and wheat for the local ration card program, which covers essential commodities such as flour, rice, cooking oil, sugar and baby milk.
