Human Rights Watch accuses Kurdistan of hiding 350 detainees in Kirkuk province

Human Rights Watch on Thursday accused the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) of forcibly evicting 350 detainees in Kirkuk province.

"The disappeared are the majority of Sunni Arabs who fled to Kirkuk or the city's residents and were detained by Asayish, the security forces of the provincial government, on suspicion of belonging to a pro-regime after their control of Kirkuk in June 2014," the organization said in a press release.

"The prisoners were not in official and unofficial detention centers in and around Kirkuk when Iraqi federal forces regained control of the area on October 16, 2017," the organization quoted local officials as saying.

"Families in Kirkuk are desperate to know what their relatives have been being held, secret detention, incommunicado, raising serious concerns about their safety," said Lama Fakih, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.
