As Iraq wipes out its dust for three years of war against a militant organization, the United States is looking to curtail Iranian influence and help the central government in Iraq resolve its differences with the Kurdistan region, the US ambassador to Iraq told The Associated Press.

US Ambassador Douglas Sillman took over his job in Baghdad in September 2016 before the start of the restoration of Mosul.

With Iraqi forces regaining control of all the areas it called for in 2014, the ambassador said Washington was focused on maintaining peace and reconstruction efforts and saw Iranian influence as a major problem.

"Iran simply does not respect the sovereignty of its neighbors. The Iranians helped the Iraqi government - in some way - to defeat a preacher, but I did not see the Iranians providing funds for humanitarian aid, and I did not see any of them providing assistance to the UN-led stabilization programs.

Iran gained significant influence in Iraq after the 2003 US invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein's regime and empowered Iraq's Shi'ite majority.

When the north and central Iraq raided northern Iraq in the summer of 2014, Iran supported the militias and provided support in a number of areas as the armed forces were rebuilding.

The Trump administration called for the disbanding of Iraqi militias, especially the popular rally after the end of the Da'ash battle. It has also pledged to take tougher approaches to Iran, threatening the US withdrawal from the historic nuclear agreement of 2015 and imposing sanctions on Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

At the same time, Iraq is seeking external support for post-war reconstruction, which the government says has caused damage estimated at $ 100 billion, while about 3 million Iraqis are still displaced months after the fighting ends.

Trump's administration has made it clear that the cost of the $ 14.3 billion military campaign against Daqash will not be replaced by similarly funded reconstruction efforts.

"Iraq is recovering from a difficult period during which it witnessed a great deal of economic devastation and social unrest. We believe that Iraq should enjoy good and positive relations with all its neighbors, including Iran," he said.

He pointed out that recent efforts by Iraq to restore relations with Saudi Arabia and Jordan made the United States hope that these two countries will play a greater role in supporting Iraq to rise from the recession.

The United States also hopes to help ease tensions between the central government and the Kurdistan region following the September independence referendum rejected by Baghdad.

Federal forces clashed with Kurdish militants in October when Baghdad regained the disputed territory seized by Kurds from an outlawed organization.

"The role we are playing, albeit somewhat modest, is to try to help both sides find solutions to move forward through the door of discussions," Sulliman said, referring to both sides' support for the idea of negotiations and negotiations that have not yet begun to end the crisis.
